Picturesque Ardèche villages
The Ardèche has a rich heritage reflected in the ‘villages of character’ that have retained all their authenticity and their distinctively Ardéche soul.
Voguë: Just 13km from Le Pommier campsite, Voguë, a village of character, is a must-see location when holidaying in the southern Ardèche. You will be charmed by its castle, paved streets and distinctively medieval dwellings jutting out over the Ardèche.
Balazuc: Perched on a rocky outcrop, the old village of Balazuc is listed as one of France's 'Most Beautiful Villages'. You will be enchanted by its feudal castle, its myriad of steep, narrow streets with alleys carved from stone and its Roman church dating back to the 12th century.
Montréal: old fortified village 3km from Largentière where the castle is famous for its medieval shows and events. The two towers, formerly defence towers, dominate the village and the country sandstone houses make this village a remarkable place.
Antraïgues sur Volane: home of the late famous French poet, Jean Ferrat. Antraigues sur Volane is another ‘village of character’ not to be missed. At an altitude of 470m, it juts out over 3 Ardéche rivers. Those who love strolling around will be seduced by its steep alleys and the 100 sculpted heads hiding in the walls.
Alba la Romaine: 2,000 years of history nestling at the foot of the Coiron massif. You will find the ruins of a Roman theatre and can explore the feudal castle, stroll through the narrow, paved streets surrounded by black basalt houses or taste fine wines produced by impassioned wine growers. On leaving the village, be sure not to miss “Muséal”, the archaeological museum that takes you on a trip back to Gallo-Roman times.
Labeaume: surround by limestone cliffs which were once home to troglodyte dwellings, the village of Labeaume offers an incredible view. Take time to enjoy life and wander around the narrow paved streets to discover the typically Ardéche houses. From mid-July to mid-August, various parts of the village are taken over by classical and world music as part of the Labeaume Music Festival.
